work made for hire

For copyright purposes, a work that is created by an employee within the scope of employment, or a work that is created by an independent author on commission under a written contract. The owner of a work made for hire is considered the author of the work, and is therefore the copyright owner. If a company commissions a technical writer to produce a manual as a work made for hire, the company is considered to be the author and owns the copyright in the manual.
